Dugongs in Qatar
Did you know ? Qatar has the second largest dudong population in the world after Australia .It is a sea mammal eating plants only .It is about 400 kg and can grow as long as 3 meters . Typically it has low reproductive rate so it is vulnerable to extintion .There is an ongoing research in Qatar about their lives .They are observing the dudongs in the beaches and looking for dudong tusks and they are interviewing fishermen . If you happen to see any of these sea mammals dead or alive then call dr. Mehsin Al-ansi at the Qatar University 7772 9996
28 New Schools in Qatar from September
According to the Gulf Times 28 new schools is expected to be opened from September accepting around 10 thousand students .
Parents seeking admissions to their children should check out the Supreme Educational Council 's website to learn about the new facilities .
There is a shortage of school seats in Doha . Baby boom among the locals and the increasing number of middle class expat families are behind this shortage .

ramada encore iftar buffet review
Ramada Encore was built in an old part of Doha on a very small site .The building is high and next to other hotels .When we decided to try their iftar buffet then we wanted to explore something new .
It is a four star hotel . The restaurant with modern design was so much minimalist that it nearly looked like a school canteen .It was rather small . Mostly families came to break their fast here but there was a large group of males as well .It really disturbed at first .I got used to families only sections .
The buffet was modest looking . I started with harissa soup . That was the only kind of soup . It was spicy and light .Chickpeas and spices like clove or cinnamon - I thought first that it was an Indian soup but it turned out that it is from Maghreb area .It was a good start .
Then I took some salads . The usual Middle Eastern salads : hummus ,tabbouleh ,mutabbal . I do not remember all of them - they were good and simple .
There were four kinds of main course on the buffet table .Lamb ,fish ,chicken and mutton perhaps .I think Pakistani dishes .I forgot the names . They were good but not special .
On the dessert table there were some French pastry with oriental sweet treats . I liked their rice pudding - it was a more concentrated one than our rice pudding that we eat in Hungary . The small cakes with silver icing were a visual delight .But they were not as tasty as they looked .
I tried not to eat too much .
The cappuccino was excellent .
And we are very picky when it is about good cappucino .
All in all it was a good but not very special iftar buffet .It was quite eclectic - when it is about Pakistani dishes I never ate better than in the rundown Shezan hotel's restaurant .
The service is excellent .Those waiters are probably the loveliest ones in Doha .
The value for the money : we used Qgrab coupons -so we payed half price - 40 rials for adults/ 20 rials for kids .It was a real deal this way but I am not sure that I would take it for the full price ...

brutal revenge for an insult
A Pakistani man brutally killed a Qatari woman because she had allegedly insulted him .The killer was a farmer working for the woman's family. He caught her in the garden kept hitting her head until she fainted then he strangled her with a t-shirt . The case is in front of the criminal court .What a bestial way of ending someone's life !
I remember a similar case 12 years ago . There an Indian employee who was fired from work killed the Indian woman who was the manager or owner of a small company .
She was pregnant when killed . So it was a double murder !

Breakfast at Casper and Gambini ,Doha
It was a sudden idea to have a Friday morning breakfast there . I do not usually go to malls for breakfast but this time we had some vouchers .
So we went there .As we arrived they tucked into the kids hand a lovely looking menu . As we saw their selection and prices for kids and we wanted to leave
at once .But as one of us was too hungry then we were forced to stay . They had nothing special for kids breakfast .Burgers and fries .Priced around
30 rial and over it .
So it did not start very well .
We ordered the most expensive breakfast item with my husband .( we had a voucher and we wanted to enjoy it) It was salmon with pouched egg and
greens . It was 42 rials .Hot drink not included .The cappuccino was 17 rial .So a breakfast can cost altogether 59 rial there .We had a voucher as I had
mentioned before so we expected that one of it will be totally free .
The appetizer arrived after ten minutes .It was lovely or olive bread or focaccia bread - I could not really tell which one . It came with spicy labneh and biscuit
.It was a very good combination . We felt comforted a bit for the high bill that we were going to pay .
Then came the salmon with pouched eggs -it looked wonderful . It was served on an oval shaped plate - fresh green salad ( oak leaf salad perhaps) with
two small sandwiches .The base of the sandwich was focaccia bread then a slice of regular smoked salmon then a nice mushroom shaped pouched egg sitting on the top .Unique look . We finished it quickly . The cappuccino was of a smaller cup very beautifully decorated foam on it. It was an artistic looking breakfast . It had good taste .
When we were about to pay we saw the bill even higher than we expected . I had done some mental math before . Was I wrong ? For the voucher which promised one free item from the breakfast menu they subtracted one of our kids breakfast -which was the cheapest item .It must have been a mistake - I thought .No - they said -this is their policy with the vouchers - they subtract the cheapest item . We had already been in several places with vouchers and we had good experience . This one was not logical . Finally ,we asked them to give us two separate bills. One for the kids - one for us . This way they could not practice their policy - as with my husband we had two identical breakfasts . The supervisor looked very much frustrated but we were happy later that spoke up and did not to pay the more expensive bill . Even this way we left 100 rials for three little kids breakfast . This greedy policy left bad taste in the mouth and I thought what a pity that the management spoils the good work of the waiters and cooks .
I remembered with nostalgia to a hotel breakfast in Al-Sadd street some years ago . We entered for a small French breakfast but at the order they offered free breakfast for the kids if we took buffet breakfast . That was a real deal then a very good business policy -I think .
I recommend this restaurant for breakfast only for the big ones .Their items for kids are overpriced and not worth the money at all .
The restaurant was nearly empty at nine -atmosphere was like an empty mall on Friday morning .Later more people arrived .
After the breakfast we were walking in the mall and we heard some razzmatazz - then we noticed that the French Paul's restaurant was full -no empty table . I felt sorry that this idea did not come to our mind earlier .
But I do not think I want to eat out at any mall again/near future . Their atmosphere somehow puts me off .

Fresh salmon salad for snacks ???
As I am browsing the homepages of international schools in Qatar I noticed that some of the posh schools- or wanna-look-posh schools- want to act as professional nutritionist .I wrote about a British school which has a long list of forbidden food items like pizza or chocolate or cereal bars and any kind fruit juice giving no clues to the parents what on earth is allowed to take for snacks to that school . They also threaten the prospective students' wards with monitoring the snack boxes ...
I found a more liberal school's home page where they rather give advice than forbid . That is nice - but how deep were they thinking about the climate of Qatar and the food items that they recommend ?I was shocked to read that they suggest the parents packing snacks like "tuna and salmon salad " " hard boiled eggs " " milk based puddings""milk based soups " . Should we risk food poisoning for the sake of healthy snacks ?It is well over 40 C during the last and first months school year in Qatar . Though everything is air-conditioned but it gets quite hot in school buses sometimes .
I am not against health food but the lack of common sense which makes me vexed . How about selling those healthy food items at schools ?

Old buses will be banned from Doha soon
Buses older than 10 years won't be allowed entry and exit to and from Qatar effective from 25 Sep 2014. #MoI_Qatar pic.twitter.com/5r7nN2Ejm5

School is a service or authority
I was totally shocked when I found a British school homepage in Doha . It promotes healthy eating at school - that is fine. But they are banning a great number of things . Children are not allowed to take with themselves as snacks the following things : any kind of drink with sugar( no fruit juice either ) only water and plain milk allowed , any kind of fizzy drink is forbidden ,no nuggets , no fried food ,no cereal bars , no chocolate , no biscuits , no pizza , no pastries , no candy floss , no pork ,no nuts ,no donuts . Some of their bans are understandable - but others are simply shocking .
What is allowed then ? If pizza is not then the famous Arab fatayer must be also no -as their ingredients are very similar . If pizza is no then croissant must be also no . They give very little advice on what to send with them . Shall mothers send sashimi or scrambled eggs in the 50 C ?
It is very difficult to pack a snack that is healthy and won't be spoilt until 11 o' clock .
I will not let my kids go there -for sure , What disturbs me very much that they behave as they were expert nutritionists .Chocolates - dark chocolates have their proven health benefits . Pizza can be healthy depending on the recipe .Nuts can cause allergy but a great number of other things as well .
Then they should ban eggs and berries as well -'cause they can cause allergy as well .
Besides this the "staff of the school will monitor the snack boxes " = they have the right to interfere with your child's upbringing ....
No chocolates again - they repeat -never . I just advice this school staff to read about Jeanne Calment wonderful life and her habits of chocolate eating . And sharing food is not allowed either .....Ooh- what wonderful world ! When I was child they taught as just the opposite - we shared the weekend leftovers from our homemade cakes on Mondays or exotic fruits or any other tasty bites .That was up to our parents what they packed for us but the local bakery and dairy factory provided a cup of free milk and free fresh croissant daily .That was a totalitarian dictature then . Now the Brits are trying to export their "democracy and freedom " to Qatar .
Children should be taught about healthy eating from very early age . Healthy food could be offered for free on regular basis for them from the school side . But interfering with parents rights to pack what they want/ they can is totally unacceptable. School is a service not authority .

Qatar Foundation - Education City - One minute promo video
at the beginning of the video you can see the traditional way of greeting among the male of Qatar - they touch each other by the tip of their nose - this is not expected from you if you meet someone from Qatar but sometimes one can see diplomats practicing this when greeting the Emir on the day of Eid .

Two years ago -13 kids died at Villaggio Mall
It was a nightmare even to read about the story .It gave sleepless nights to many mothers in Qatar .I was one of them .Even then and since that time we could not have understood what had happened .
The day care /nursery was working without proper licenses . It did not have fire exit - the teachers got no training about emergency .When first they detected the light smoke -instead of evacuating the place -they called their boss for further instructions .Though the fire brigade was there on time- they were not informed for half an hour about the existence of that nursery .When they learned about the nursery they got wrong map . When they opened the roof finally to reach the small ones they were very slow and it was too late ... everybody died inside -teachers kids ...The Weekes family lost 3 kids -their triplets . Parents paid ad to remind the Qatari facebook community -it happened 2 years ago .The photo of the tombstone was there ...

The world's oldest Bactrian camel died at age 38
The world's oldest Bactrian camel "Tsugaru-san"
"Tsugaru" was born in the dude ranch of the Tsugaru area Japan.
It was closed by financial difficulties, and the parents of the Bactrian camel were taken over in the other place, but "Tsugaru" has been left behind.
Several years from it, she had got some baits from neighboring kindly people over a fence.
She survived it somehow.
She had to live lonely.
Someday, she was introduced by a program of NHK(Public broadcasting of Japan).
The man who lived in Yokohama Japan watched it, and he felt very sorry.
He spent a lot of private money to get her, and he donated her to Yokohama City Nogeyama Zoo.
She came to Nogeyama Zoo at estimated 7 years old on December 18, 1982.
After that she has been bred carefully.
She keeps beating her own record as the world's oldest camel after December 18, 2012.
She will bee 39 years old.estimate (120 years old as human years)
Now,she's very happy.

A spy case in Qatar
A spy case in Qatar
A Philippine man was sentenced to death and two others for life imprisonment according to local daily papers .
He had passed important information to his government .He had access to sensitive information about the army , weapons , and their maintenance . He had been working here since 1993 and got himself involved with spying around 2009 .
The government in the Philippines denies the charges claiming that they have cordial relations with Qatar and no reason for spying .
Many Qatari were shocked when learned that such important positions are given to expats .
I remember a similar case 12 years ago . Then a Jordanian young man was sentenced to death then pardonned by the Emir of Qatar .

It was a warehouse that caught fire - full of building materials . Not close to residential areas .However some people think that risk awareness is quite low in Qatar at times .It took several hours to put it out . The Petrol Station itself was not affected .

Tse Yang restaurant - Pearl , Doha - review
The place was as mysterious as its name suggested .It was on the first floor so we had to take the lift .A Chinese looking woman was at the reception - she lead us through narrow corridors with dim light into a big room with oriental decor .
Tse Yang means the forbidden city .It was indeed as we arrived at the special dinning room of the Chinese emperor .
As we looked at their menu it seemed that they really expected the Chinese emperor to dine with them .The cheapest item on their drink list was 20QAR - it was a plain soft drinks price . 20 times more than at the supermarket . Quickly I made some calculation and found out that it would cost 100 QR to have a simple Coke /fanta whatever for five of us - something that we could buy later for 5 rials at the supermarket .Finally we decided to share a big bottle of mineral water .That was only 30 rial .
Luckily the waiters saw through the situation very quickly and they arranged everything smoothly so we did not feel embarrassed even later that we share the dishes .
It was easy as we sat at a nice table which had rotating plate in the middle .Soon the chicken dumpling arrived as entree .It looked beautiful -it was decorated with red caviar .Unfortunately it did not taste good at all .The dough was very thin and the filling did not taste chicken to us .One of my kids went for sweet corn chicken soup .I did not like that either - but he ate it all .
For the main course we took sizzling dishes served in hot stone casseroles .They were fantastic ! I ordered for myself tofu stew - it had the typical Chinese flavor with nice gravy and bell peppers ,tofu cubes and mushroom . Others went for chicken in hot stone casseroles and that was great too .The stone dishes were put on the rotating plate and went around .We took turn to help ourselves to the dish .It was fun . The noodle with seafood was of ethereal type - so thin - almost nothing . It was not bad but we like it the rustic way - thick noodles .
The good thing about the stone casseroles was that they kept the food warm while we were chatting .
The caramelized banana and apple was a great end of our dinner . The sugar coat was perfectly covering the fruits and tasted wonderfully . It seems to be so simple but it is not .We tried the next day at home and it is not simple at all .They served six pieces for one person . Again we went for sharing .
The bill was as we expected - no surprise at the end .
It was funny as we visited the restroom . It was also made in special Chinese style with narrow corridors ,mirrors ,patterns .I started to feel dizzy . I had to go out quickly . I got claustrophobia - I almost forgot it - then it was a reminder .
Summary : " I think it was a real gourmet dinner . We had tasted things that were very special and you can not buy at the supermarkets ."
My family members thought " It was very good dinner . much better than any of my business lunch I had earlier this week at five stars hotels"
" it was delicious but not so much that this very high price could be justified "
" Mummy did not allow me the fresh watermelon juice . She told me that 30 rial for a glass of fruit juice is too much "
If I were the restaurant manager I would include into the price the steamed rice and would not make people pay extra 15 QR for it .

Why Amnesty not impressed with Qatar Labor Law
Amnesty International announced that it is not impressed with the new Labour Law plan in Qatar
They think no restriction should be done when someone wishes to leave the country .In the plan the Ministry of Interior would make an automatic permission - they need 72 hours to check out if the person is wanted for something or not .
Amnesty thinks it is not fair .
Anybody should be allowed to leave whether wanted or not at once .
IMO
I think it is very difficult to control so huge migrant population . To filter the criminals is a must .I do not mind waiting 72 hours if it keeps the country safe from criminals . Please note - hundreds of thousands of people arrive in Qatar from countries where crime and corruption is extremely high ( Philippines ,India ) - at the same time with this system they can keep the country running with low crime rate . No! Waiting 72 hours does not make someone a slave ! Though I know that there are cases when leaving quickly is a must . ( sudden illness ,death of a relative )
Changing jobs is allowed only every five years according to the new law . It should not be restricted -at all -Amnesty thinks .
I do agree with Amnesty on this point .
(But then what would happen to those private companies who make huge profit while keeping wages and salaries low ? How would they survive ?)

Red Lobster - Doha restaurant review
It is situated in the center of the city . It is not a so friendly or picturesque area . From one side of the restaurant there is the huge traffic of Suhaim bin Hamad street from the other side the rumbles of constructions of Al -Jazeera street .
The gigantic buildings of Qatar rail on the other side of the street make me feel lost too . The lovely shaped restaurant is so much inviting ... and anyway I heard about their lunch deal on weekdays .
It was a good idea to enter - that was my first impression . The place is the island of peace in the jungle of the city . Lovely interior evoking the life of fishermen and sailors of New England . Different tools of the nautical life are also displayed .Live lobsters in a water tank .Three or four families are having their lunch with kids .
We did not come for a luxurious lobster meal - just for a simple lunch meal .
It was only 35 rial . For this money we were given a three course meal .The first course was a creamy soup for me .It was too thick for my taste . So I added some water to it and some black pepper .It was better that way . Anyway - the scones which were served first were very good . I think in the US they are called cheese biscuits or cheese bread . That came without order - it is something that we call pogacsa in Hungary .... childhood memories came to my mind then ... 70's 80's Budapest cheap fish restaurant where the fish soup was served in cauldron and homemade pogacsa came with it ... for a price that even a middle class family with three kids could afford in the always expensive city ..... I think that does not exist anymore ...
Then I felt back to the reality - this is an American place in Qatar we write 2014 ...
My main course the pasta with shrimps in Alfredo sauce . It was very plain ... like a beginner housewife first try with this dish - it was not a big portion but I felt I ate too much by the time the dessert arrived .The dessert with ice cream and brown sponge cake was a typical American sweet treat that I always avoid but my kids ate it . The kids asked for different courses . Kids meal only for children under 12 year .They were given something to color and wax crayons .Nearly every meal came with French fries on their kids menu . That made my health conscious preschooler very disappointed .Shrimp popcorn was full of oil ... the fish sandwich looked fine but not eaten after by them . The pizza as main course was better - they finished it all .
Telling the truth I know that 35 rial was very little money for a three meal course but I expected something more delicious .
I told to myself that I would return one day to taste a dish from their regular menu and not the value meal .
I can recommend this place if you are looking for a quiet place to escape the urban noise .Their value meal is for you if you do not mind dishes in canteen style with friendly and polite service .

Rescued baby and the grim reality -scenes from a war- torn Arab country
It happened in Aleppo , Syria but it could have happened in any other war -torn country . After a fight the civilian survivors have to dig their own loved ones from the rubbles . Usually dead ones . This video shows a baby who survived . Who was able to give out sounds and was found conscious and well .Like a miracle .
This story is horrible and beautiful at the same time . The beauty is the hard work and hope of those who were digging with their bare hands - the solidarity - the virtue that keeps mankind alive in spite of all the horror that one must face in the world .
I would say that it is a story with happy end but buried under their own house the baby's mum and sibling was lying dead .
No -there is no happiness in the wars - not even for the survivors !

"dirty secret of the local food industry "
It is not the first time that I hear about this - many restaurants in Qatar try to sell the cheap Vietnamese white fish as local king fish or hamour - the difference in price is huge - the practice became so much widespread that the local authorities threaten the cheaters with jail terms and a million rial fine
until then - see what you eat - if you think that ordering fish is a good idea in this heat...

Mr. Gyros restaurant review
Mr ,Gyros is an American Greek restaurant at Al-jazeera petrol station . I had this strange idea the other day to try their gyros. I managed to overcome my phobia of petrol station eateries after the deadly blast in February . And I put my prejudices aside about American cuisine as well.
What can go wrong with a gyros ?- I thought . The marinated slices of steaks are roasted on rotating spit and cut and served with salad and pita bread .It simply can't be spoilt ...
Well ,well - I was very naive . I love shawarma as well but I wished to eat gyros the way we used to have it in Hungary .Much better than the shawarma around here . I remember a friend of mine who married a khaleeji guy then when in Hungary he found it very strange that a country like Hungary have far better and more delicious shawarma /gyros than the wealthy place where he grew up .
Money can't buy everything -it seems .
Well - we bought our gyros meal around 40 rials . We got a tray with the meat /some rice .dressing ,salad . Then I got the big surprise - this American gyros tasted no gyros at all -but it had the taste of canned meat .
If you do not mind that then I can recommend the place - it is the usual American look - posters on the wall -nice wooden chairs -polite service ... even their banana milk shake was nice .... for 20 rial !
Otherwise I felt it was pure waste of money .

Qatar Airways smoking plane
It must have been very scary experience on Sunday .The flight to London from Doha had to return after take -off -as there was a very strong smell of burning and the cabin was full of thick smoke .
It landed luckily and the fire was put out .It is believed to be caused by faulty electric wiring but it is not official yet .
I found a very interesting opinion about what might be behind the incident .
"The problem nowadays, not only with Qatar Airways, is that their route/ flight expansions require a heavy utilization of their fleets leading to shorter turn around times, this in turn leads to flippant checking/maintenance of the smaller details such as wearing out wiring insulation etc. and this can also lead to such events....there are many reported events involving smoke/burning smells in different parts of the aircraft from all over the world."

leaking pizza oven and the negligence
For Want of a Nail
For want of a nail, the shoe was lost;
For want of the shoe, the horse was lost;
For want of the horse, the rider was lost;
For want of the rider, the battle was lost;
For want of the battle, the kingdom was lost,
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.
This old poem comes to my mind when I read about the series of neglect at the Hala istanbul restaurant. These neglects caused the death of 11 and injured 35 about two months ago . It caused horror and panic to all residents living here .
There was a pizza oven under maintenance - there was a valve not closed . The gas company was not informed and finally the gas tank at the top of the building was filled while the restaurant was closed .
Just a little common sense and attention paid to the work and it could have saved lives . Now four people charged with negligence .

Learning Arabic with Al Jazeera
The famous TV channel launched a site for helping those who wish to learn Arabic . They give some small daily and weekly learning material based on their programs . Officially this is for the false beginners who can already read and write Arabic - but I think someone using Google translate can easily benefit from it even if he does not know how to read and write . Nowadays you can copy paste the Arabic text there/ see the transliterated version of the text then you can listen to it .
You can socialize and share your experiences with the others using the site - if you have difficulty in understanding some point then you can even ask a teacher on the site about Arabic language .
Exciting new way to learn !
