3 Highlights That Made This Qatar National Day Unforgettable

 Google’s Heartwarming Tribute

Nothing sets the tone for a day of national pride like seeing Qatar’s flag gracing the Google homepage. It was a simple yet powerful gesture that resonated deeply, reminding us of the global recognition of our culture and heritage.

The Majestic Italian Ship: Amerigo Vespucci
This stunning Italian tall ship graced Doha’s shores, bringing with it a sense of wonder and maritime tradition. Often called “the most beautiful ship in the world,” the Amerigo Vespucci was the talk of the town. While only a fortunate few managed to secure tickets to step aboard, its presence added a touch of international flair to the National Day celebrations.

 The Spectacular Balloon Festival

In perfect harmony with the National Day festivities, the Balloon Festival lit up Doha's skies with its vibrant, larger-than-life displays. The colorful array of balloons drifting gracefully against the city’s skyline created a magical atmosphere that will linger in memories for years to come.

Flamingo season has started on Qatar’s shores! 🦩

Flamingo season is a spectacular natural event on Qatar's shores, typically occurring during the cooler months, from late autumn to early spring. Migratory flamingos, especially the greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus), stop along the Qatari coastline as part of their journey between breeding grounds in Africa and wintering areas in Asia.

Key locations to witness these graceful birds include:

  1. Al Thakira Mangroves: A rich ecosystem providing a habitat for flamingos and other migratory birds.
  2. Khor Al Adaid (Inland Sea): Known for its serene and undisturbed environment.
  3. Dukhan Coast: Offers beautiful views and wildlife sightings.
  4. Simaisma Beach: An excellent spot for birdwatching.

The flamingos are drawn to Qatar's shallow, saline waters and mudflats, which are perfect for feeding on crustaceans and algae—their primary diet that gives them their distinctive pink hue.

For a memorable experience:

  • Visit during early morning or late afternoon when the birds are most active.
  • Bring binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens for a closer look.
  • Respect the wildlife and avoid disturbing the birds or their habitats.

Lost in translation - the FB bot and the Dhow Festival

I visited  the   fb page  of  Katara several times this  week . The  original  Arabic posts  are translated  the wrong way .Look at this :

The misunderstanding likely stems from the word "المحامل" (mahâmil), which refers to "dhows" (traditional boats) in this context. However, the word "محامل" could also be interpreted as "pregnancies" or "things carried" in some contexts. The Facebook translation algorithm might have confused it with the term for "pregnancy" because it lacks cultural context and nuances specific to the Dhow Festival.

It was   funny   !
